Banyan Tree – Beautiful Ambience, But Misses on the Basics

My recent stay at the Banyan Tree was largely enjoyable, offering the kind of serene luxury the brand is known for — but a few surprising quirks kept it from being a truly seamless five-star experience.

The Highlights:

The setting is magnificent, with standout dining and drinks at Vertigo and Horizon Grill. The bathroom was especially impressive, complete with a stunning view of Kuala Lumpur — definitely a high point of the stay.

The Lowlights:

Where the experience faltered was in some basic areas. Breakfast was underwhelming — the food was average, the coffee forgettable, and the service unremarkable. The strict breakfast dress code felt unnecessarily rigid. Being asked to change out of hotel slippers just to grab a morning coffee seemed out of step with the otherwise relaxed, resort-like atmosphere. And if the hotel insists on formality, it should be matched with a breakfast experience that genuinely feels refined.

Additionally, having two single beds pushed together to form a double is not what you'd expect from a hotel of this calibre — it's a detail that detracts from the overall comfort.

Final Thoughts:

Banyan Tree shines in many of the big-picture elements: design, atmosphere, and spa services are all exceptional. But inconsistencies in the basics — like breakfast and bedding — make the experience feel slightly out of touch with its five-star aspirations. Come for the views and the calm, but temper your expectations on the finer details.

This is a nice 5* hotel. The rooms are very spacious, the bathroom was also very spacious and well appointed with a nice bathtub. Service is excellent all around. Nice breakfast with a view. Excellent location.

Definitely pricey but worth a treat!

I had a wonderful spa experience today, thanks to my sister’s thoughtful birthday gift. I enjoyed a 60-minute deep tissue massage and a 30-minute purifying bath, both of which were truly relaxing. My masseuse, Amy, delivered an excellent massage treatment. Her technique was great, and she was very friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. The spa provided a beautiful private massage room that was clean and well-maintained, adding to the overall comfort. The bath was soothing, complemented by a warm cup of ginger tea and fresh watermelon as snacks, making the experience even more satisfying.

Outstanding hotel, modern and attention to quality on small details such as slippers and amenities in the room. Floor to ceiling windows provide skyline night views to remember. Service was excellent from all staff, it was my birthday and the team has upgraded the room and arranged details to mark the occasion which was much appreciated. Rooftop restaurant and bars are excellent too. Wouldn't stay anywhere else when returning to Kuala Lumpur.

The rooms are very spacious and clean, water power is very strong, we enjoyed that, their service is friendly too! But, the room we selected included breakfast, but the buffet had a more limited selection than expected. It only offered plain congee, a few basic breakfast items, and some pastries. If you want pancakes, omelettes, nasi lemak, or other hot dishes, you'll need to order from the à la carte menu at an additional cost.
